Bendigo police will take part in a statewide road operation targeting speeding, drink and drug driving and mobile phone use over the Easter holiday period.

Operation Nexus begins on Thursday and runs until Easter Monday when large numbers of Victorians will be travelling away from home.
Bendigo Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Gordon said events in Bendigo are traditionally a big drawcard for the region with an increase of traffic expected on the roads.

"Obviously with restrictions on international (and interstate) travel, we're anticipating more people travelling within Victoria," he said. "We're envisaging a lot more traffic on the roads. We'll have additional resources locally but the state highway patrol is also working in the area through the Easter period."
As well as speeding, drink and drug driving and mobile phone use, Acting Senior Sergaent said there would be a focus on fatigue.
"We expect a lot of people from out of the area (will be) travelling long distances on open roads when they're not used to it," he said. "Locally, the issue is going to be driver fatigue. It can be big factor in collisions on open roads.

"The message we want out there is for drivers to plan their trips and plan breaks. There will be Driver Reviver sites set up and people should make the most of and get (to their destination) safe and sound."
In central Victoria, SES Driver Reviver sites will be set up in Dunolly, Rochester and Marong.
Victoria Police acting deputy commissioner for specialist operations Libby Murphy said the long weekend would see drivers undertake in more high-risk driving where some people make poor decisions.
"This long weekend, please don't make a decision behind the wheel that could ruin your life or those around you," she said. "Don't speed to get to your destination faster, don't drink or take drugs before driving, put your mobile phone down and your seatbelt on, and make regular stops if you're tired."
