Central Victoria Blazers wins State League Three women's hockey premiership

THE Central Victoria Blazers women’s hockey team was victorious in Sunday’s battle with Melbourne University for the State League Three premiership.A hard-fought contest ended with the Blazers striking the winning goal in the last 10 seconds for a 3-2 victory.Melbourne Uni started strongly and dominated field position and possession in the opening 10 minutes.As the match went on, CV’s midfield started to take control and create scoring chances.After a goalless first half, both attacks fired after the break.Melbourne Uni broke the deadlock, but the Blazers replied within two minutes through Ebony Stephen.The Blazers racked up several penalty corners and the play of right-side attacker Jade Deppeler was a highlight.At just over six minutes to go, Hannah Vibert struck CV’s second goal.The University attack replied quickly.Approaching the final minute, a rash tackle by Uni resulted in a penalty corner.Melbourne defender Brittany Wood broke early on the first attempt from the penalty corner and was sent to the halfway line, which left three players and the goalkeeper in Uni’s defence.The Blazers’ best and fairest for 2011, Tracey Johnson struck the ball fiercely from the top of the circle into the net.As CV was celebrating, the siren sounded to signal a 3-2 victory and promotion to State League Two.Grand final action hit off Saturday when the CV Blazers men’s team took on La Trobe University in State League Four clash.An early La Trobe goal was answered by Tim Burnham.A more experience La Trobe struck two more goals before the break and another three in the second half to achieve a 6-1 victory.The Blazers will stay in SL Four next season.
