THE Macedon Ranges Shire has declared a climate emergency with the support of 405 petitioners and ratepayers.
The shire is the latest council to join the Climate Emergency Declaration movement, which now incorporates over 40 per cent of Australia's local councils.
Neighbouring shires Hepburn Shire and Mt Alexander Shire are among those to have declared their own emergencies.
The council's decision came after leading conservationist Sir David Attenborough warned in a speech to the UN Security Council that global action to reduce emissions was "already too late".
He and described climate change as "the biggest threat to security that modern humans have ever faced."
