Council's executive manager infrastructure, Tanya Goddard said the group will play an important role in providing input and advice on future plans to better manage waste and recycling in the shire.
"There are new government policies in place with regards to how commingled recyclables, glass, and food organics and garden organics (FOGO) are collected and processed," she said.
"There's also increased community expectations that we will process waste responsibly."
Ms Goddard said this was a fantastic opportunity to think about how the community could reduce the waste currently sent to landfill.
The new group will assist council on ideas for waste management - focusing on reduction and recycling opportunities - the separation of glass and FOGO, and the development of a resource recovery centre at the Castlemaine Landfill Site.
Members of the group are intended to represent a broad cross-section of the community, with varying skills and backgrounds.
Ms Goddard said the group would comprise up to eight community members and at least one councillor, plus council officers.
"We'd love to hear from people who are passionate about waste management and the environment, and interested in playing a part in this exciting project," she said.
Membership of the CWRG will be for at least one year with meetings held bi-monthly.
Expressions of Interest are open until 5.00pm on Monday 26 April 2021.
