The Nauru national football team, who will compete in this year’s AFL International Cup, is appealing to central Victorian football clubs to host their players.Navarre Football Club in the Maryborough-Castlemaine League, Stawell Football Club in the Wimmera League and Bridgewater in the Loddon Valley Football League have already agreed to billet the Nauruan players until the conclusion of the International Cup in August, but more hosts are still required.Nauru national team coach Graham Pratt, who is also the newly appointed Bendigo Bombers football manager, said six to eight players still needed to find host families ahead of this year’s International Cup.Pratt said not only would the Nauru players live with families at the local clubs, they would also be eligible to play with the clubs and qualify for this year’s finals.Pratt said the players would be on non-working visas, but would offer labour on farms or in local business in return for accommodation.“So far we’ve got nine players going to Stawall and Navarre and two to Bridgewater, so somewhere between six and eight need to find a place,” Pratt said.“The Nauru players can get a three-month visa, which means they will be available to play with local clubs as well as qualify for the finals.“They will be on a non-working visa so they can’t be paid, but can volunteer their services on farms or in businesses in return for being billeted.”Pratt said the Nauru players, who play on a gravel ground in their home country, need to get the chance to adjust to a grass surface ahead of the International Cup.“The Nauru players play on a ground which is made of crushed phosphate,” he said.“They don’t play on grass, so playing within these central Victorian leagues will be a great opportunity for them ahead of the competition.”The International Cup, which will be held on Sydney grounds before finishing in Melbourne, will involve 27 teams competing for the title from August 12 to August 27.Nauru finished fifth in 2008, losing just one match to eventual champions Papua New Guinea. The Nauru team needs to finalise billeting registrations by June 30.
