Daniel Andrews has issued a statement, revealing he is being treated in intensive care after a fall on "wet and slippery stairs" on Tuesday morning.
"A CT scan has revealed several broken ribs and vertebrae damage," Mr Andrews said, "and subsequent medical advice has recommended I remain in intensive care for the next few days."
Mr Andrews has also thanked Ambulance Victoria for its response, and has confirmed James Merlino will continue to act as premier over the next few days.

James Merlino spoke in place of the premier at the launch of the state's truth and justice commission on Tuesday morning.
The acting premier said Daniel Andrews had suffered "a nasty fall".
"I know he's fine and he's getting some good care as a precaution," Mr Merlino said.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has been taken to hospital for X-rays after he fell while getting ready for work, AAP reports.
A government spokeswoman told AAP that Mr Andrews did not suffer a head injury but the fall on Tuesday morning was "concerning".
Deputy Premier James Merlino will replace the premier at a scheduled news conference in Healesville on Tuesday morning.
