To celebrate National Volunteer Week, the Bendigo Advertiser continues its look at those who give their time...Without the hard work of volunteers, says volunteer coordinator Patty O’Donoghue, the Strath-Haven residential care facility would not be able to run many of its activities.“I calculated that our volunteers worked 540 hours in the month of March alone,” she said.“People come in for one-on-one visits, they do craft, garden, one lady comes in to do manicures. And volunteers make the morning tea and afternoon tea.”Even the elderly residents themselves are known to lend a hand.Strath-Haven resident Bobbie Malone, 87, has spent much of her life involved in community activities, teaching Scottish folk dance and fundraising with her art and craft. When she moved into residential care Ms Malone didn’t see any reason to stop.“That’s why I’m a volunteer,’’ she said.‘‘I hand make cards and have a regular clientele at Strath-Haven.“It’s tedious, but I love to do it.’’The money she raised from her card sales helped the ladies’ committee buy two wheelchairs for the residents.Volunteer mentor Mario Sedlar, 58, works with Strath-Haven residents at the Men’s Shed group.“I really enjoy going, it allows me to pursue my hobby in woodwork,” he said. The generation gap between himself and the residents doesn’t faze him.“I think men like to tinker,’’ he said. ‘‘It doesn’t have to be much, (so long as) they’re still active, doing something with their hands and they have something to show for it afterwards.’’Strath-Haven hosted 75 volunteers at a thank-you lunch yesterday at the Kangaroo Flat Sports Club.
