STRATHFIELDSAYE siblings Russell and Tasman Nankervis are gearing up for another big year of cycling action on the mountains and the roads.Russell, 18, and Tasman, 15, were in hot form at the Australasian Schools Cycling Cup raced in Shepparton. Both followed older brother Rowan into mountain bike racing.A highlight at the Schools Cup was Tasman’s gold medal-winning feat in the under-17 cross-country final for mountain bikes. The year 10 student at Bendigo South East Secondary College also tackled the under-17 expert class in BMX and was runner-up. Racing for Bendigo Senior Secondary College, Russell was third in the under-18 downhill final on his mountain bike.“I like doing cross-country and enduros, but it’s hard to match the adrenalin from a downhill run,” Russell said. The year 12 student said the Schools Cup continued what had been a hectic few months of racing. The Nankervis brothers raced at this year’s Australian Mountain Bike Championships on Mount Eagle near Adelaide.Russell was 12th in the under-19 cross-country duel, and Tasman was seventh in the under-17 cross-country showdown.A highlight of Russell’s cycling career, which began more than nine years ago, was victory in last year’s open final at the Dirt Works 100km Classic at Woodend. He was runner-up in the Bendigo Mountain Bike Club’s elite cross-country championship raced on the Cavagna Road circuit in Sedgwick and also competed in the national mountain bike series leg at Mount Buller.Tasman was fifth in the under-17 class of the national series race at Mount Buller.A big winter for Russell includes the Bendigo MTB Winter Series as well as next month’s six-hour state enduro championship.Tasman won the club’s under-17 championship last winter and is aiming to tackle more road races this winter.
