The idea is to encourage students to live a country life as early as possible and stop them having to move to metropolitan areas for training.
La Trobe and Melbourne University announced it would start the network in 2018.
It followed years of lobbying for a medical school based partly in Bendigo, which culminated in the University of Melbourne using its expertise to create a new postgraduate degree based in Shepparton.

Melbourne University's building expansion will allow a total of 96 students to stay in Shepparton and deliver new teaching and learning facilities.
The expansion should be completed and able to house all new students by the start of the 2022 academic year.
