As she got up to move away, the man punched his wife to the back of her left ear. The court heard the woman felt dizzy from the assault.
The man then grabbed two meat cleavers and put them on each side of her neck.
The man said he was going to kill her before she managed to move away, terrified.
She went to a house a couple of doors down the street and police arrived to speak with her.
Officers went to the man's home and noted he smelled of alcohol.
The man was arrested and taken to the police station for interview, but it was not held due to the language barrier.
The defence lawyer said the man had no prior convictions and had not been charged since these matters.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said the offending was a "terribly serious incident that must never happen again".
Mr Southey said the charges warranted a community corrections order but the language barrier would make it "logistically difficult" for the man to complete such an order.
The man was convicted and sentenced to a two-year good behaviour bond. He was also ordered to pay $1000 to the court fund.
