Police said a passing motorist found the crashed vehicle along the Bendigo-Pyramid Rd, near Hughes Road, at Woodvale about 1am on Saturday.
The man driving the car died at the scene. He was the only person in the car.
"It appears the driver lost control and travelled across the gravel shoulder of the road before crashing into a number of large trees," police said.
Members from the Bendigo Highway Patrol are investigating the cause of the crash, and looking at whether speed was a factor.
There have been 31 people killed on Victoria's roads so far this year, compared with 40 at the same time in 2020.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
