FIFTY-THOUSAND people will be allowed at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, ahead of the start of the AFL season.
The state government has confirmed the MCG will be able to operate at 50 per cent capacity, as it announces a return to COVID-19 restrictions in place at Christmas. Just under 29,000 people will be permitted at Marvel Stadium.
Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed Victorians will be allowed to have up to 30 people in their home each day, 100 in outdoor gathering, from 11.59pm Friday.
Hospital and aged care visitor limits have also been removed, but Mr Andrews said individual hospitals may have localised visiting rules for certain parts of the hospital.
Masks will only be required in high risk settings.
Mr Andrews thanked all Victorians for following COVID-19 restrictions during the snap lockdown and subsequent restrictions.
He offered particular thanks to those isolating at home after coming into contact with COVID-19 cases, after the state lockdown finished.
Mr Andrews said the return to lighter restrictions would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts of Victorian citizens.'

"It's with confidence that we can return to those COVID-safe summer settings," Mr Andrews said.
COVID-19 response commander Jeroen Weimar urged Victorians to stay vigilant about testing.
It comes as NSW also eased COVID-19 restrictions, after 40 days without new cases.

VICTORIA will return to its COVID-19 safe summer settings from 11.59pm Friday, allowing up to 30 people to visit a home and meaning masks will required only in high risk settings.
In addition 75 per cent of workers will be able to return to the office from midnight, both in the public and private sectors.
Premier Daniel Andrews announced the change on Friday, saying the COVID-19 restrictions would return to what they were at Christmas.
Victorians will be able to host up to 30 people in their home each day for private gatherings. Private gatherings of up to 100 people will be allowed outdoors.
Masks will only be required in high risk settings, such as large supermarkets and department stories, and public transport.
