STATE Opposition leader Daniel Andrews launched a campaign in Bendigo yesterday to ensure that the Regional Rail Link goes ahead. The rail line would provide capacity for extra train services that will transport up to 9000 passengers across the network in peak hour.Regional Rail Link separates regional trains from metropolitan trains, giving Bendigo, Geelong and Ballarat trains their own dedicated tracks through the metropolitan system from Sunshine to Southern Cross Station.Joined by Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan and Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards, Mr Andrews described Regional Rail Link as critical rail infrastructure and called on the Coalition to explain its plans for the project.“This is a very important project,’’ he said.‘‘It gives Bendigo passengers a dedicated line straight into Southern Cross Station, so they’re not having to compete with metropolitan trains and metropolitan passengers with getting through the city.“It’s all about making sure that we can better connect and better link regional cities like Bendigo with Melbourne. It’s better access and up to a dozen extra services an hour.’’Mr Andrews said Premier Ted Baillieu and Deputy Premier Peter Ryan needed to explain to the public where they stood on the project. The office of Minister for Transport and Roads Terry Mulder failed to return calls and emails from the Bendigo Advertiser yesterday.
