BETTER warning systems to prepare people for floods are needed, according to Buloke mayor Leo Tellefson.Cr Tellefson said present warning systems for flooding were not good enough. He said authorities needed to better use technology such as sea and land levels.“We’ve got to be able to predict what impact the water will have,’’ he said.“It’s quite feasible to get that system.’’Cr Tellefson said the Richardson River in Donald was not listed on the Bureau of Meteorology website.“The river flooded and wrecked two motels and five or six homes,’’ he said.Cr Tellefson said the Buloke council was working with the Charlton flood recovery committee to discuss levee banks. He said the council would talk to state and federal governments about funding to fix roads.“We’ve got to be allowed to improve things,’’ he said.Loddon Shire chief executive officer John McLinden said he expected an assessment of damage across the shire to be completed this week.Mr McLinden said the availability of funding, resources, staff and contractors would play a part in what flood-damaged infrastructure was fixed and when.He said flash flooding hit Wedderburn on Friday.Campaspe mayor Neil Pankhurst said damage to the road network would cost several millions of dollars, which the council could not afford to pay for.He said much of the recovery work in Rochester was complete, but there was still a lot of damage to be assessed in rural areas.*Do you think a better flood warning system is needed?
