Bridgewater and Newbridge threatened by Loddon River

PEOPLE in Bridgewater and Newbridge are being warned to evacuate because of a rising Loddon River.Flooding is threatening homes and businesses, and the SES have warned people to take immediate action to protect life and property.The SES have advised after last night's rain, areas of both towns close to the river will flood.The Newbridge football clubrooms is in roof deep water, and only the tops of the goal posts can be seen.

At Bridgewater the river has burst it's banks and is creeping towards the Loddon Bridge Hotel, and other businesses in the main street.Evacuation centres have been set up for Newbridge residents at the Victoria Theatre at Tarnagulla, and the Bridgewater Hall for Bridgewater residents.Bridgewater General Store and Red Couch Cafe part-owner Stewart Chamberlain said his shop and several other shops, including the Bridgewater Riverside Motel have been sandbagged.Mr Chamberlain said the gutters were full at the front of his shop, and that he understood a number of local farmers were sandbagging to protect their homes. It is believed residents in Park Street, Bridgewater, were evacuated earlier in the day.Mr Chamberlain said parts of the Bridgewater Public Caravan Park were already under water, and that water was banking up against the Calder Highway bridge on the Loddon River.
