THE museum that honours cycling champion Sir Hubert Opperman will relocate to the Campaspe Shire service centre in Rochester in a bid to attract more visitors. The Oppy Museum was situated at Rochester Railway Station but a report, part of the council’s financial sustainability review, suggested the museum be moved to allow longer opening hours and save the council $13,300 each year in cleaning costs.Sir Hubert Opperman, born in Rochester on May 29, 1904, was an internationally recognised endurance cyclist before he enlisted in the RAAF during World War II and eventually became a federal politician.Mayor Neil Pankhurst said the relocation would be a win-win for both the Rochester Development Committee, which maintains the museum, and the council.Cr Pankhurst said the new location would make the service centre more vibrant and an increased community focal point.“At present, the museum receives minimal visitation because it is not staffed and is open by appointment only. A move to the service centre will mean the museum will be open to the public every day the service centre operates, that is, five-and-a-half days per week,’’ he said. “The Rochester community has established an affinity with the Oppy legacy and this is demonstrated in a range of town images and marketing materials. “The community continues to seek opportunities to build this theme to further develop town identity to enhance social cohesion and tourism attraction.’’
