Cyclists pursue track riches in Bendigo

A TOP-CLASS field of cyclists from across Victoria will be in Bendigo next Tuesday to contest the Lindsay Harrington Memorial Wheelrace.The 2000m classic will be the feature event on day two of the popular Christmas carnival series.Racing begins at 3.30pm when the juniors take to the track.The seniors racing will start at 6pm and include the women’s A-grade and B-grade scratch races and the women’s 1000m wheelrace.The Lindsay Harrington Memorial honour board includes some of the sport’s best.Bendigo cyclists chasing a hometown victory at the Tom Flood Sports Centre include Jarrod Moroni, Sam Crome, Lawrie Naughton, Syd Anstee, Sam O’Dea, Jason Stirling, Ryan Pontelandolfo, Mark Flood, Adam Lennon and Brad McCallum.Since his cycling career began, Moroni has racked up several starts in the Bendigo International Madison and been a Harrington Wheelrace finalist.He is yet to win the highly sought after classic on a track he knows so well.First five in four heats qualify for the final.Moroni will race off 25m in heat three against the likes of Paul Fellows (scratch), Adrian Hansen (10), Jacob Schmid (30), Jason Stirling (90) and Pontelandolfo (100m).Contenders for the women’s 1000m wheelrace include Bendigo stars Jessica Berry, Beth Duryea, Carly McCoombe, Imogen Jelbart and Toni Abbisogni.
