Witness Christopher McDonald gave the evidence in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Thursday for the committal hearing of Daniel Oberin and Kevin Johnson.
Mr Oberin and Mr Johnson, both from Echuca, have been charged with the murder of 29-year-old Matthew Alexander at Daltons Bridge, near Cohuna, on September 13, 2019.
Mr McDonald told the court he was with Mr Alexander the morning he died.
He said he went to Mr Alexander's Eastons Road address the night before and spent several hours working on a Holden Commodore with Mr Alexander and another acquaintance, Cameron Warby.
Mr McDonald told the court another car drove into the driveway sometime after 5am.
He said he was standing with Mr Warby and Mr Alexander behind the bonnet of the Commodore when the car stopped.
Mr McDonald said he heard two car doors open but did not look up to see who arrived.
The witness said he heard Mr Alexander ask Mr Warby if he knew the new arrivals and Mr Warby respond that he didn't.
Mr McDonald told the court he heard the two men start walking towards the group when a gun was fired into the air.

The witness said he ducked down behind the bonnet of the Commodore.
Mr McDonald told the court the car obstructed his view of the person, but he could see part of a shotgun.
He said the man with the gun yelled at him to get down and Mr McDonald sat down with his hands covering his head.
The witness told the court he heard one of the men have an argument and physical altercation with Mr Alexander.
Mr McDonald said he heard what he believed was the same man then enter Mr Alexander's shed and rustle around inside.
The witness gave evidence that he heard a man yelling at Mr Alexander and the sound of someone being hit with a metal bar and falling to the ground.
Mr McDonald told the court he then heard a second gun shot and a man say "I've killed him".
The witness said he looked up and saw a man take a cartridge out of a shotgun and fumble around trying to get something out of his pocket.
Mr McDonald said the man who was inside the shed came out to the man with the gun.
The witness told the court the man with the gun said "I've killed him" another two times before the pair got back into their car and left the scene.
Forensic pathologist Dr Matthew Lynch also gave evidence on Thursday.
He told the court Mr Alexander had a gunshot wound at the top of his head, fractures to his nose, and cuts to his head.
Dr Lynch said the injuries showed it was likely Mr Alexander had been fatally shot from close range.
The committal hearing will resume at the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Friday. Mr Oberin and Mr Johnson were remanded in custody.
