ALMOST 100 people had to wait more than 20 hours in the Bendigo Hospital emergency department across 11 months, according to Freedom of Information documents obtained by the state Coalition. The documents show that 17 people waited more than 24 hours between July 1, 2009, and May 31, 2010, before being transferred to a bed or discharged.Eighty people waited between 20 and 24 hours, 74 people waited more than 18 hours, and 125 people waited more than 16 hours. The Coalition also released figures saying 6314 people were on outpatient waiting lists, as of May 31 this year. But the government hit back, saying the Coalition was playing cheap political games rather than offering any real vision.Coalition spokesman for health David Davis said the figures were the “secret and shameful numbers that John Brumby does not want you to know”.Mr Davis said the Coalition would massively overhaul the way waiting lists were managed, including unprecedented transparent reporting, additional resources and beds.A spokeswoman for the health minister said the government was loking forward.“We know there is more to do and that’s why a Labor government would deliver $618.7 million, as part of our $1.5 billion health policy, to ease pressure on our emergency departments so more Victorians can be treated faster,” she said. The spokeswoman said the Coalition’s manipulation of data was shameful, and was used to cover up inadequate and unfunded health promises.“We are focused on treating more patients, not funding more spreadsheets, and that’s why we would invest $80.1 million to provide an extra 300,000 outpatient appointments,’’ she said.
