THE revamp of the Maryborough Castlemaine Football Netball League is complete after the Navarre, Natte Bealiba and Lexton football and netball clubs were accepted into the league on Tuesday night. The move comes after a review of football in the Ballarat region resulted in the Lexton Plains Football League being disbanded. The addition of the three clubs means the MCDFL will have 14 teams from next season. The 14 clubs also voted in favour of an eight-team finals system, in line with the AFL system.“This model is an extremely fair system that certainly rewards the teams that finish in the top 4, as these teams will receive a double chance in week one of the finals,’’ MCDFL operations manager Liam Brady said in a statement.“At the same time, the final eight format also gives the teams that have finished from fifth to eighth a chance to taste finals football and netball, with their premiership dream still well and truly alive.”The MCDFL season will start on April 9 with a rematch of this year’s grand final between Maldon and Avoca. That game will be the only match on April 9, with the remainder of the round one matches to be played on April 16.The season will be 16 rounds, meaning each club will only play three teams twice per season. “With 14 teams the draw isn’t going to be even, but it will rotate each year,’’ Brady said.Delegates also endorsed a fourth junior football competition which will commence next year to run alongside the senior, reserve and under-17 divisions. The age level of the fourth junior competition will be determined before the league’s AGM in December. The league also plans to introduce a “minis” competition next year. The preferred option is to stage the matches at half-time of the senior game each week. “The minis games will give the kids who may be too young to play in the new fourth football competition a chance to still have a game on a Saturday,’’ Brady said. “One club president said last night, ‘Often some players favourite footballing highlights are playing at half-time in the senior competition’. The league is certainly excited by this initiative.” Along with the new football competitions in season 2011, there will be a 13-and-under netball competition. “There has been great enthusiasm shown by a number of clubs who are interested in fielding 13-and-under netball teams which is exciting,’’ Brady said.“The league looks forward to all new competitions in 2011 being a success.“(We are) particularly excited about making the MCDFNL very much a family day each week where more people will be participating and attending matches.”
