NEW Zealand national squad member Antonia Edmondson has joined the Bendigo Bank Spirit for this season’s Women’s National Basketball League action. An athletic guard, Edmondson has spent the past two seasons representing Albury-Wodonga in the South East Australia Basketball League. She was in Dandenong’s squad for last summer’s WNBL campaign.Edmondson played for the Christchurch Sirens in the 2007 WNBL season. In a two-season stint with the Albury-Wodonga Bandits, Edmondson averaged 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game. She averages five points and two rebounds per game in the WNBL.Spirit’s head coach Bernie Harrower said Edmondson brought a level of athleticism, defensive intensity and scoring ability to Bendigo’s line-up.“Toni’s a tall guard with a fantastic vertical leap, which makes her a tough player to defend and will help us in games,’’ Harrower said.“Her skill will help increase the level of competitiveness at training.“We believe she’s a player on the brink of establishing herself in the WNBL and we’re confident our program can help her do that.“She’s had a couple of successful years in the SEABL, which is a tough league, as well as a season working in Dandenong’s WNBL program.”The Spirit’s season tips off this Sunday against reigning champions Canberra Capitals at 2pm at Bendigo Stadium in Marong Road.
