The fire was reported at a property about 3.30pm on Tuesday.
Fire Rescue Victoria said there was no-one home at the time, and that a neighbour alerted authorities after hearing smoke alarms and seeing smoke.
Senior station officer at Bendigo, Craig Houlahan, said that in this case a working smoke alarm prevented more severe damage.
The fire started in the kitchen and did not spread beyond that room. The exact cause will be investigated.
Police are on scene.
The area has been blocked to traffic.
