At midnight, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded the temperature as 27.5 degrees, after the Sunday temperature peaked at 38.1 degrees at 5.30pm.
The Country Fire Authority has declared Monday a day of Total Fire Ban for the North Central, Northern Country, Mallee, Wimmera, North East and East Gippsland districts, with temperatures forecast to reach 40 degrees.

The ban means no fires can be lit or be allowed to remain alight in the open air.
Gusty north to northwesterly winds are expected over northern parts of Victoria before a mild and gusty southwesterly change moves over the Mallee during the afternoon and reaches northern central parts of the state in the early evening.
