MANDURANG needed just seven overs to chase down what Axe Creek spent 40 overs compiling in their Emu Valley Cricket Association match on Saturday.
After the Cowboys posted 9-121 batting first at Mandurang the home side launched an extraordinary attack on the Axe Creek bowlers.
In a mere seven overs the Rangas plundered 1-132 - a run-rate of 18.8 per over.
The three batsmen who pulled off the whirlwind run-chase were captain Matt Giri (60 n.o. off 21), Zane Keighran (40 n.o. off 12) and Linton Colcough (32 n.o. off 9).
Of the 42 deliveries bowled by the Cowboys, 25 were either hit for six (11) or four (14), while there were nine dot balls.
No Axe Creek bowler was spared from the carnage - Daniel Dixon's two overs went for 39, Jakk Trenfield's three for 53, captain Ash Dixon's one for 19 and Nathan Nikolic's one for 21.
Trenfield picked up the only wicket of the innings when he had Colclough caught by Nikolic in the fourth over.
The Rangas' seven overs of carnage:
Over 1 - 4,4,1,6,0,4: 0-19
Over 2 - 0,1,4,4,4,4: 0-36
Over 3 - 4,6,6,4,0,0: 0-56
Over 4 - 6,W,2,0,6,6: 1-76
Over 5 - 4,4,4,0,6,1: 1-95
Over 6 - 4,4,0,1,6,1: 1-111
Over 7 - 0,0,6,3,6,6: 1-132
It's the second time this season the Rangas have made quick work of a run-chase against Axe Creek.
When they met in round four the Rangas needed just 15.5 overs to make 1-136 in reply to the Cowboys' 132.
As well as the brutal batting display, Saturday's win by the Rangas - which now has them two games clear in the top four - featured James Bailey's first five-wicket haul.
Bailey bagged 5-20 from eight overs, which included the first three dismissals that had the Cowboys reeling at 3-7, while Keighran proved tough to get away, taking an economical 2-9 from eight tidy overs.
The bulk of the Cowboys' 121 runs were scored by Nikolic (42) and Conner Bulger (38).
* West Bendigo pulled off the upset of the season, comfortably beating what had been the top side Spring Gully at home by six wickets.
Bowling first, the Redbacks dismissed the Crows for 146, which would have been far worse for Spring Gully had it not been for the efforts of Lachlan Brook and captain James Fox.
Brook (54) and Fox (32) combined for 86 runs, with Brook the only player among the Crows' top seven to reach double figures.
Among the early wickets to fall was the competition's leading run-scorer Rhys Webb (5), who was dismissed for single figures for the second week in a row when caught by Redbacks' captain Tarran Kilcullen off Daniel Whiting (1-23).
As well as catching Webb, Kilcullen (3-13) snared three wickets of his own, while Zac Makeham (2-15 off 8) dried the runs up.
The Redbacks' successful run-chase was set up by a 76-run opening partnership between Fraser Gentry (65) and Tom Floyd (23) and later finished off with an unbroken stand of 50 between Josh Eastley (38 n.o.) and Travis O'Connell (11 n.o.) as West Bendigo took 34.2 overs to answer with 4-149.
All four wickets for Spring Gully were taken by Webb (4-37), with the Crows' loss sending them from first to third on the ladder.
* California Gully notched its third win of the season, while continuing Sedgwick's losing streak.
The Cobras prevailed by three wickets set up by a four-wicket haul from Aidan White.
White claimed 4-11 off six overs as the Cobras dismissed the Rams for 147 at California Gully.
White's dismissals included the two key scalps of Greg Thomas (14) and Rams' captain Jordan Ilsley (0).
Patrick Grelis (34) and Alan Friswell (25) put on 57 for the sixth wicket for the Rams.
Captain Marcus McKern (68) and Mick Galvin (41) steered the Cobras' successful run-chase, with the pair the only two California Gully batsmen to reach double figures in the home side's reply of 7-151.
McKern's 68 was his fourth score above 50 from nine innings, while Galvin's unbeaten 41 came off just 36 balls.
Lachlan Woodward (3-27) was the leading wicket-taker for the Rams as they lost their sixth game in a row.
* United is back on the winner's list following back-to-back defeats after accounting for Marong by six wickets.
The Tigers sent Marong in and restricted the Panthers to 7-140 at Malone Park.
Captain David Blume (38) and Duane Anderson (35) anchored the Marong innings with a 71-run partnership for the third wicket after the Panthers had been 2-18.
With his 3-21 from seven overs, United's Jarrod Starr moved to the top of the EVCA's wickets with 19 for the season.
Set up by a 94-run opening stand between Broderick Williams (53) and Alex Code (43), the Tigers reached 4-142 in the 32nd over to take the points.
