An Aboriginal Place Names Officer is among the positions the city is adding to its staff.
The position is only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.
City health and wellbeing director Vicky Mason said consultation would be among the role's primary responsibilities.
She said the city had been conducting research about the process of introducing dual place names, and had identified some potential sites.
But Ms Mason said there was still a lot of consultation that had to happen with traditional owners and with the broader community.
The city has started recruiting for the position, which will be offered part-time until June 2023.
It follows a resolution by the previous Bendigo council to explore the potential for dual place names.
A motion was unanimously carried during the June 2019 council meeting.
A list of potential sites for dual naming had yet to go before council, Ms Mason said.
She hoped discussions about places that might be suitable for dual naming would start taking place within the next three months.
The position description calls for the Aboriginal Place Names Officer to work closely and collaboratively with the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and Taungurung Land & Waters Council throughout the entire process.
Ms Mason said the Victorian Government was also looking at its place naming protocols and regulations - something she expected would influence the work the City of Greater Bendigo was doing.
She said the city got together the funding for the new position by reorganising some internal resources and re-prioritising some of the work the community partnerships team was doing.
Ms Mason said some of the research that had already been conducted was by an independent consultant, who had an Aboriginal background.
Back in 2019, Cr Jennifer Alden - now the city's mayor - said dual naming of key sites in the Bendigo area would be a significant step towards reconciliation.
"It's a commitment to increasing recognition across the municipality," Cr Alden said at the time.
Then mayor, and current Eppalock ward councillor, Margaret O'Rourke considered the dual naming motion a proud moment for the council.
"We can't change the past but we can certainly change the future," Cr O'Rourke said at the time.
