BENDIGO community radio will get off to a fresh start today. Two broadcasters have been awarded long-term licences on their own frequencies after a two-year battle with Australia’s communications watchdog.Fresh FM and Phoenix FM will increase their broadcasts from 66 to 168 hours per week.Phoenix FM president Geoff Morris said the radio station was looking forward to the challenge.“It’s a big day,” he said.“I’ve thought about the journey a lot in the past couple of months, doing all the preparation for the switch, and it really is tremendous.“A couple of years ago it was just a small bunch of volunteers with a dream.“It was one thing to say we had that dream, but another thing entirely to do it.”The Australian Communications and Media Authority proposed a shake-up of community radio more than two years ago to allow the ABC News Radio service to use the frequency.ACMA initially believed a shortage of spectrum was to blame for the limited number of licences in central Victoria, but a detailed search showed other frequencies were available.City of Greater Bendigo councillor Peter Cox will press the button transferring Phoenix FM to the new frequency at 12.15pm today.Goldfields Community Radio Cooperative Ltd (Fresh FM) will operate on 101.5FM and Central Victorian Community Broadcasters (Phoenix FM) on 106.7FM.Central Victorian Gospel Radio Inc (Gospel Radio), which operated on 105.1FM, has stopped broadcasting.
