More than a dozen CFA vehicles have controlled a grass fire at Carapooee near St Arnaud.
Advice from the CFA for residents in the area is warning people to monitor conditions watch for a wind change, which was expected at 8pm.
It is expected the wind will push the smoke in an east-northeast direction.
There is currently no threat to any communities but roads should be kept clear so emergency services can respond.
The next update is expected at 10pm.
Anyone affected by smoke who is experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing should call Triple Zero (000).
