BENDIGO has recorded its wettest March for more than 130 years.Eight days of rain delivered a soaking 116.4mm, the best start to autumn since 154.9mm fell in 1878.The bumper downpour is more than five times the long-term March average of 21.5 mm.Bendigo Airport has been the site of the Bureau of Meteorology weather station since 1991.The previous weather station was located at the Bendigo Gaol and recorded weather observations from 1862 until it was moved to the airport.Bureau senior forecaster Scott Williams said a monsoonal trough that dipped through Victoria had caused much of the rain early last month. He said the trough also brought humid tropical air and thunderstorms.“A real indication of how wet it was is the fact there have been some years where we have had virtually no rain in March,” Mr Williams said.“It’s generally a pretty dry month in inland Victoria, but this one certainly went against the grain.“There’s been quite a lot of areas that have recorded double or even treble the average rainfall.”Mr Williams said most of the rain fell earlier in the month.April was not likely to have as much rain.
