BENDIGO’S Steve Serpell is a man with a small idea but a big vision. Mr Serpell has invented a new drink-bottle holder for bikes, called freedom design, which could revolutionise cycling. The former account manager recognised the difficulty cyclists were having putting their drink bottle back into the conventional holder, which is mounted on the down tube or the seat tube.“At one point I was watching Stuart O’Grady at a criterium and noticed he was having trouble finding the holder,” he said.“So even the best in the world find it hard.“I just thought why wouldn’t you have the hole in the bottle and the pin on the bike?”Mr Serpell said his design, which he now has the worldwide patent for, can be made to make the bottle more aerodynamic.“You can almost create the bottle in any shape.”The invention was two years in the making and is attracting interest from bottle manufacturers around the world.“We all have ideas and dreams - I’ve just kept going with it.“In 1983 there were bikes that had clipless pedals, and cyclists were putting their feet in cages. Now all bikes have clips. You never know what will happen.”Mr Serpell has been nominated for a Bendigo Inventors Award.
