The man, aged in his 20s, was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after a series of incidents in Bridgewater.
Maryborough Acting Sergeant Richard Jane said police were called to a dispute at a Lily Street home about 12:10am on January 1.
A man left the address and allegedly stole a car from a property on Sebastian Road.
Acting Sergeant Jane said the four-wheel-drive was seen driving erratically before crashing into a tree on Sebastian Road.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Acting Sergeant Jane said police had yet to interview the driver due to his injuries.
He urged anyone with information to call the Wedderburn Police Station on 5494 3300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
