CENTRO Lansell shopping centre in Kangaroo Flat has become a neighbourhood safer place - place of last resort. The centre agreed to become a designated place of last resort and has now joined seven other sites in greater Bendigo. The mayor, Cr Rod Campbell, said the council was also seeking permission from the Bendigo Jockey Club to include the Bendigo racecourse in Heinz Street on the list of sites.“Council is very appreciative that Centro Lansell have agreed to become a neighbourhood safer place should the need arise,” he said.“The decision to designate these locations of places of last resort is based on the buildings or spaces that could afford some protection from radiant heat, the biggest killer during bushfire. “They are a place of last resort in emergencies only.“All of the sites will have signage installed to make it clear that going to a place of last resort is exactly that. “There is no guarantee of safety and there are some risks associated.” Centro Lansell manager Chris Barraclough said the centre was happy to assist the community as much as possible.“We want to do as much as we can in times of need,” he said.Mr Barraclough said that on days when the centre was place of last resort the building would be open with water and toilets available to people. The other sites in greater Bendigo include the Calder Highway in Kangaroo Flat; the Queen Elizabeth Oval; Canterbury Park in Simpsons Road, Eaglehawk; Bendigo showgrounds in Holmes Road, North Bendigo; Maiden Gully Primary School; Lords Raceway in McIvor Highway, Junortoun; Strathfieldsaye Primary School; and Dower Park in Station Street, Kangaroo Flat.
