Bendigo Motel Association president Kristyn Slattery said members were having a busier festive season than usual.
"In the past, we've found people head to where there's water," Ms Slattery said.
She believed catching up with family and friends was among the reasons Bendigo's accommodation providers were in demand.
Ms Slattery said the increased trade was very welcome, especially after such a challenging year for the industry.
Accommodation providers had been noticing increased bookings ever since restrictions on travel within Victoria were relaxed.
"We hope that continues through the school holidays and beyond," Ms Slattery said.
City of Greater Bendigo tourism and major events manager Terry Karamaloudis said the visitor centre had noted a strong increase in demand for accommodation.
"It's by no means back to pre-COVID, but it's quickly heading in that direction again," Mr Karamaloudis said.
He said more than 1.2-million visitors stayed in the Bendigo region overnight in the year ending March 2020.
Mr Karamaloudis believed the city was doing everything it could to encourage visitors back to Bendigo.
There had been an increase in day trip visitation, as well as travellers staying overnight.
"Attractions are now open, the art gallery is back to full pace, we've announced Mary Quant for March next year, a significant new international exhibition," Mr Karamaloudis said.
Also among the events planned for the new year were three NBL games.
"It's a significant opportunity for Greater Bendigo and the region," Mr Karamaloudis said of the NBL games.
"We're about to experience the highest level of men's basketball in this nation right here in Bendigo.
"I'm sure there will be great demand for accommodation, great support for local businesses, for restaurants, cafes and bars and that whole sector that's just had such a horrific 2020."
