The federal government is pumping $34 million into 378 country events scrapped because of coronavirus.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said the first payments would roll out before Christmas.

"These events bring our families and farmers together, build community spirit and help bridge the divide between country and city," he said on Thursday.

"They also help farmers stay competitive by providing an opportunity to share innovation and new ways of doing business."

But some won't go ahead in 2021, with the Royal Canberra Show already a casualty of disease-induced restrictions.

It's the first time the event has been cancelled since the Second World War.

But the laughing clowns will be gagging for action at shows across NSW with the state government giving the green light for up to 5000 people to attend.

Agricultural Shows Australia chair Rob Wilson said there were 50,000 volunteers who would have renewed optimism from the funding.

"With some states already giving the go-ahead to shows next year, subject to COVID conditions being met, this funding will ensure hundreds of societies can start planning now," he said.
