A TRIO of hard-edged midfielders led by Golden Square's Jack Geary fill the first three spots in the Addy's top 50-ranked players in the Bendigo Football-Netball League since 2005.
Geary, Gisborne's Ollie Messaoudi and Sandhurst's Blair Holmes are the top three from the list that is based on performances from the 15 seasons between 2005 and 2009.
The Addy's player rankings use a system based on the weekly six best players submitted by clubs, with a weighting given towards contributions made to a winning team (similar to the starting point for umpires in casting votes post-match) that produce a ranking total.
The points system:
Winning team - 1st best (16.0 points); 2nd best (13.5); 3rd best (11.0); 4th best (8.5); 5th best (6.0); 6th best (3.5).
Losing team - 1st best (7.0); 2nd best (6.0); 3rd best (5.0); 4th best (4.0); 5th best (3.0); 6th best (2.0).
Drawn game (both teams) - 1st best (10.0); 2nd best (8.5); 3rd best (7.0); 4th best (5.5); 5th best (4.0); 6th best (2.5).
In short, the rankings aim to reflect performing consistently, playing a key role in a winning team and longevity.
Square's Geary came in at No.1 in December last year when the Addy did its rankings based on the 2010-19 period.
And with another five seasons of information added on back to 2005 he has retained the top spot with 930.5 points.
Geary boasts an envious BFNL CV with Golden Square - five-time premiership player, 2018 Michelsen medallist, BFNL 2010s Team of the Decade captain, seven-time inter-league player and Victoria Country captain among his accolades.
Geary, who is closing in on the 200-game milestone for Golden Square, has featured in the Bulldogs' best players in 100 games, including 61 where he was rated among their top three performers.
The big bolter from last year's 2010-19 rankings is Gisborne's Messaoudi.
Messaoudi came in at No.13 in the 2010-19 rankings with 518.0 points.
But extending the timeframe back to 2005 boosts Messaoudi to 821.5 points and into second position.
The tough-as-nails Messaoudi is a five-time best and fairest winner at Gisborne and a key component of the Bulldogs' era of success during the 2000s.
"You don't got competitors as big as him... he gave his all in every game he played. I said to our young blokes after the game that if they can get anywhere near him, they are going to have good footy careers," former Gisborne coach Rod Sharp said after Messaoudi's final game in 2015.
Earlier this year the Addy pitted both Geary and Messaoudi against each other as ruck-rovers in the battle of the BFNL's Team of the 2000s vs Team of the 2010s.
In what was one of the tightest match-ups, Addy readers who voted had Geary narrowly winning winning the head-to-head battle over Messaoudi 52% to 48%.
Sandhurst's 2016 premiership captain Holmes rounded out the top three with 799.0 points.
