Castlemaine, Kyneton and Daylesford are among the towns subject to a severe weather warning for potentially damaging winds.
The Bureau of Meteorology advises damaging south to southwesterly winds, averaging 40 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of up to 100 km/h are expected to develop above 400 metres above sea level from about 5am on Sunday as a change crosses the state.
The threat of damaging gusts will fall rapidly once the change passes and be almost certainly gone by 10am.

There is a moderate risk of a thunderstorm asthma event across much of central Victoria on Saturday.
The Northern Country district, which encompasses towns such as Bendigo, Rochester and Inglewood, and the North Central district - including Castlemaine and Maryborough - are subject to the forecast.
The forecast is low elsewhere in the region.
A moderate thunderstorm asthma forecast means one of the elements necessary for a thunderstorm asthma event is present and there is a moderate chance of an event occurring.
People with current, past or undiagnosed asthma and hay fever are most at risk of thunderstorm asthma.
Those at increased risk should avoid being outside during storms, especially the winds that precede them, have a reliever handy if appropriate, and be familiar with their asthma action plan and asthma first aid.
The University of Melbourne's pollen count and forecast puts the grass pollen forecast in the Northern Country district at extreme on Saturday, and high in the North Central and Central districts.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a chance of a thunderstorm in the east of the Northern Country district, as well as raised dust in the north, during the afternoon and evening, as well as winds up to 45 km/h.
There is a slight chance of a shower in the North Central district, with winds up to 35 km/h.
