City honours former YMCA stalwart

THE outstanding community contribution of the late Peter Krenz was recognised when the Bendigo Leisure Centre was renamed the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre at the weekend.Mr Krenz was the CEO of the Bendigo Regional YMCA for 14 years until his death from cancer in October 2007.He was the driving force behind the growth of the YMCA in Bendigo and it was under his leadership that the Bendigo, Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk YMCAs consolidated to form the Bendigo Regional YMCA.City of Greater Bendigo director of community wellbeing Barry Secombe, who worked closely with Mr Krenz on a number of major projects, acknowledged Mr Krenz’s broad contribution to the local community by highlighting many of the significant achievements behind which he was the driving force.These included the establishment of the B Central Youth Services centre and the youth accommodation centre, Y House.The high esteem in which Mr Krenz was held in the YMCA was recognised by the presence of YMCA Australia chief executive Bob Nicholson, and representatives from the City of Greater Bendigo, the Eaglehawk community and the YMCA Australia board.YMCA life-member and friend of Mr Krenz, Jill Williams said the renaming of the centre was a fitting tribute for the outstanding work Mr Krenz put into the centre.“The countless hours and enormous dedication Peter and other staff and volunteers put into this centre and to Eaglehawk is immeasurable,” she said.
