KANGAROO Flat coach Wayne Stubbings described Brent Hamblin's stunning weekend with the ball in the Bendigo District Cricket Association as a just reward for the pressure he created.
Across the Bendigo District Cricket Association's Saturday-Sunday double-header Hamblin went on a rampage with the ball, bagging a combined 11-13 from 17 overs in wins against Huntly-North Epsom and Bendigo United.
Hamblin celebrated his 29th birthday on Saturday by bagging 5-10 off nine overs against the Power.
But he then bettered that performance on Sunday, decimating the Redbacks' batting line-up to take 6-3 from eight overs.
"It was a fantastic weekend for Brent. To get five wickets on his birthday on Saturday and then come back and back it up with another six on Sunday was outstanding," Stubbings said.
"Obviously, it's great to get those wickets, but equally as important was he bowled a lot of maidens as well, so he really built the pressure on the batsmen and it was a great reward for his effort.
"We stuck to our bowling plans really well over the weekend."
Of the 17 overs Hamblin bowled at the weekend, 10 were maidens, with the Roos knocking over the Power for 107 on Saturday and routing Bendigo United for 64 on Sunday.
Hamblin's weekend of destruction with the ball elevated him to the top spot on the BDCA's wicket tally with 15 at an average of just 5.93.
His 11 wickets for the weekend featured six caught, three bowled and two lbw.
Kangaroo Flat wicket-keeper Josh Collinson had the best view of Hamblin's superb two spells, describing them as the best display of bowling he's seen during his lengthy time in the BDCA.
"Over the two days that's as good as anyone I've seen bowl," Collinson said.
"He had his plans for both days and executed them really well. On Saturday out at Huntly I reckon there were only two balls from his whole spell that he didn't put them where he wanted.
"He was relentless on Saturday and then on Sunday he was even better. He just didn't miss his length all weekend, which was the key I believe.
"I can't recall anyone that I've played with or against bowling any better than what Hammer did at the weekend.
"He really should have had seven-for on Sunday; I grassed one at the end and I was certainly always in the game when Hammer was bowling. Not being a regular wicket-keeper, Hammer had me sweating behind the stumps."
Hamblin's 6-3 on Sunday were his career-best figures.
"Hammer is a class act and just so driven. He's one of the best competitors I've played with and got his just rewards over the weekend," Collinson said.
On what was one of the most crucial weekends of the BDCA season given 12 points were up for grabs, Kangaroo Flat and Strathdale-Maristians were the only two teams to win both games.
The Suns and Roos - touted pre-season as the two top contenders for the flag - are unbeaten and already have a two-game buffer on the rest of the competition.
