Health minister Martin Foley said the last active coronavirus case in Victoria is in hospital and has been recovering for weeks.
Mr Foley addressed the media from the St Kilda Botanical Gardens this morning.
"(This case) is one of the remaining immunosuppressed members of the community who has had the virus for some time," he said. "They continue to make a slow recovery but out of an abundance of caution they are being kept in isolation in hospital until they have recovered.
"In some cases, particularly if the patient has pre-existing conditions, it does take a long time to shake this infectious and nasty virus.
"We are hopeful the patient concerned continues to make important progress to recovery."
Mr Foley also urged people who live in or have visited Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton, Point Cook or Sanctuary Lakes between November 16 and 18 to get tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms after sewerage testing found traces of the virus.
He said the detection of the virus in the sewerage was unexpected given it has been eight weeks since the last known case in the area.
"It could mean a number of things," he said. "It could be someone in the community we have missed, someone who has travelled through the community and left the virus behind or it could mean the virus has been shed as pre-existing cases start to shed virus from body.
"Out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with national guidelines issued, we have that alert."
Mr Foley said premier Daniel Andrews is expected to make an announcement regarding wearing masks on Sunday.
"Masks continue to play an important role in keeping us safe," he said. "the public health advice will be underpinning our response and the premier will have more to say tomorrow."

In the past 24 hours Victoria has tested 11,333 people for the virus.
The streak without a new case is encouraging as Victorians wait to hear from premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday regarding the potential easing of more restrictions.
His announcement will come with the borders to New South Wales and Tasmania set to reopen this week.
