The highly regarded Fechner will move across early next year, with the position created following a sweeping restructure of the sport, and will administer road cycling, track cycling, BMX riding, para-cycling and mountain biking bodies.

Fechner has been chief executive at NA since 2017 and has been involved in the sport for some 25 years.

She said the lure of a new challenge was too compelling.

''It's been an honour to lead this sport over the past three-and-a-half years and I'm immensely proud of what the Netball Australia team has achieved across my time with the organisation," Fechner said.

AusCycling chair Duncan Murray said Fechner was the ideal leader to push the sport forward following significant governance reform.

"During her tenure at Netball Australia, Marne more than doubled revenue, grew the professional league, and led substantial organisational redesign and cultural change," Murray said.

"In Marne, we have found a world-class operator to unlock cycling's potential."

Fechner, who also served as NA's head of commercial, and chief executive of Netball World Cup Sydney 2015, was a key driver of many initiatives that have underpinned the growth in the sport.

Among these were the five-year broadcast deal with Nine and Telstra for the Super Netball competition and Diamonds Test matches.

Victorian Rugby Union boss Ron Steiner has been appointed interim chief executive although said he will not apply for the permanent role.
