FORMER Bendigo Pioneer Jye Caldwell is headed to Essendon after his trade request from the Giants went through in the closing stages of Thursday night's deadline.
The Giants and Bombers struck a deal in which Caldwell, pick 44 and pick 74 were traded to the Bombers in return for pick 29 and a 2021 second round pick.
Caldwell played 11 games with the Giants in his two seasons with the club after being taken with pick No.11 at the 2018 National Draft.
The 20-year-old informed the Giants last month that he wanted to return to his home state.
"We are extremely excited to bring in a young player of Jye's quality," Essendon's general manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro told the club's website.
"He's a contested-ball winner who oozes composure and sure ball-handling whenever he's in possession. Additionally, we know Jye has a lot of development ahead and is only going to get better with more exposure to senior football.
"Jye really complements our young midfield brigade in Andy McGrath, Darcy Parish and Kyle Langford, and will hone his craft alongside experienced players in Dyson Heppell, Dylan Shiel and Zach Merrett amongst a few.
"We're thrilled to welcome another dynamic midfielder to our list and look forward to seeing Jye don the red and black for years to come."
A prodigious talent from a young age, Caldwell played junior footy with Golden Square before earning a scholarship to Geelong Grammar.
