Treasurer's words welcomed
It is easy to see Arthur Hayes from his comments in the Bendigo Advertiser (Saturday, November 7) is a retired businessman on easy street. Clearly he is not a small business person who has either gone under, lost the lot, or is battling to survive in Victoria.

In my opinion Josh Frydenberg has every right to give Premier Andrews a real blast. The federal government is funding the Jobkeeper/Jobseeker program at a massive cost to the community with Victoria taking up the lion's share and plunging us further into debt.
Victorians in the private sector have borne the brunt of the pandemic courtesy of the ineptitude of our state government's handling of the hotel quarantine arrangements which allowed the virus to escape, kill over 800 people and send many businesses broke.
No accountability for the massive stuff up and a mickey mouse inquiry into the fiasco that will achieve little and let the real perpetrators off the hook. Good on you Josh for calling out our State leaders!

Our carbon contribution
I beg to disagree with Ian Cooper about Australia's contribution to climate change (Letters, 24/8).
There is a misconception that Australia is only responsible for 1.3 per cent of global emissions.
Australia actually supplies 34 per cent of fossil fuels to the rest of the world, and is leading the world in selling coal and gas.
When our export emissions are included, we are the fifth largest carbon polluter globally- at about five per cent of global emissions. For a country that has a population equivalent to 0.33 per cent of the total world population, we are punching well above our weight in our contribution to the climate crisis.
China has committed to net-zero emissions by 2060; a stark contrast to our Australian federal government who has refused to commit to a net-zero emissions target.
The pressure is on Australia to act responsibly and take real action to decarbonise our economy.

Bike riders beware!
My husband and I had nearly completed a wonderful ride on the O'Keefe rail trail yesterday.
As we were about to leave the bike/walking path on the creek/canal up to Lake Weeroona, my husband fell off his bike, when it slipped from underneath him where there is a slimy brown sludge leaking across the path.
A few weeks ago we were walking past another bike accident in the same place. Even for walkers it is very slippery. My husband, thankfully, was not seriously injured. But someone may be if there is not a warning sign or the sludge is removed.
