The work is part of the town's streetscape revitalisation project and will take place in stages until next June.
It will include trenching in preparation for the new underground conduits, installation of cabinets, and streetlight upgrades.
It is intended that the undergrounding of power will improve network reliability, bushfire safety, and views of the township.
Mount Alexander Shire Council says the project team is working with Powercor to minimise disruptions during the busy December period, and confirm the scope and costs of works to run power into the buildings.
"We'll be making this information available to affected retailers and property owners once it has been finalised," director of infrastructure and development Jess Howard said.
"It is important these works align with heritage design requirements, and we will continue to work through these details with the local working groups.
"We don't expect any connection changeovers to commence until at least December."
