Selwood is a triple premiership player, having won grand finals in 2007, 2009 and 2011 - all before he took over the captaincy in 2012 following Cameron Ling's retirement.

Since then he's been at the helm as the Cats have suffered defeat in a preliminary final four times, falling one game short of the grand final in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Those heartaches will fade away at the Gabba this weekend though when Selwood runs out in front of his teammates to take on Richmond for the 2020 premiership.

"I dream to win the premiership each year, I'm sure it's the same with Trent (Cotchin, Richmond captain) but I dream for my team to just be up there and get to enjoy the success again," the 32-year-old said.

"We always follow how it plays out and I've been in envy of what the Tigers have been able to do over the recent years.

"Now it's up to our guys to take it away."

Selwood admits he is lucky to be getting the chance to feature in Saturday's game after injuring a finger in the first week of the finals against Port Adelaide.

The 309-gamer had to undergo surgery after suffering a severe dislocation in the loss to the Power, but has proved his fitness in the wins over Collingwood and Brisbane in the past fortnight.

Selwood said his chances of playing had relied on getting the surgery completed as quickly as possible.

"We got lucky to be honest," he said.

"We came back from Adelaide and we were lucky enough that there was a surgeon available to be able to do the surgery.

"That was an easy tidy-up job."
