A WEATHER warning has been issued for Bendigo and large parts of central Victoria as the state braces for heavy falls tomorrow.
The Bureau of Meteorology is now predicting possible flash-flooding for parts of central Victoria as well as north east Victoria and parts of Gippsland.
Bendigo, Castlemaine and Kyneton are among areas where heavy rainfalls could drop, with conditions predicted to ease in Victoria into Saturday evening.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
- Be alert that in areas recently affected by fires, heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
- Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
- If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
- Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
- Stay away from fallen powerlines always assume they are live.
- Stay informed monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency.
Earlier
Warnings for heavy rain will be issued for Friday and Saturday as a tropical weather system approaches the state.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting widespread falls of 5-15 millimetres, but isolated totals of up to 50mm are also possible.
Friday's forecast is for humid, wet and stormy conditions, with the rain extending from the west and reaching central areas on Friday afternoon and evening.
The heaviest rain is expected overnight into Saturday morning as the tropical air mass crosses Victoria.
Other news
Forecaster Miriam Bradbury said a severe weather warning would be issued on Thursday afternoon.
North-east Victoria is expected to get the most rain, and flood watches will be issued for the region's river systems.
After further isolated showers for central Victoria on Saturday, a cool change is forecast on Sunday.
"We are going to see a much cooler and drier air mass move in," Miriam Bradbury said.
Snow is possible down to 1200 metres.
