The world number 67 started on the back foot after finishing the front-nine at the Wentworth Club at three over.
He made par on the first and second before being snagged by a bogey on the third.
He then went on to card four more pars before two consecutive bogeys on the eighth and ninth to wrap up the front.
Unfortunately his card didn't improve in the first section of the back-nine as he was hindered by a double-bogey six on the 11th, followed by another bogey straight after on the 12th.
He was six-over through 12, made par on the 13th before making his first birdie of the day on the par-three 14th.
However, he dropped a shot straight after on the par-four 15th to return back to six-over.
He scored two pars on the 16th and 17th before ending the back-nine on a positive note with a birdie on the par-five 18th.
Ahead of the second round he is five-over in 108th position on the leaderboard.
On day two he will tee up alongside Joel Stalter and Jorge Campillo at 11.15PM AEDT.
The leaders are Justin Harding (RSA), Adri Arnaus (ESP) and Tyrrell Hatton (ENG) who wrapped up the first round at six-under.
"This is a tournament I've been coming to since I was five years old," Hatton said in his post-round interview.
"To lift the trophy here is a goal of mine in my career and hopefully I can play well the next few days and give myself a chance to do that.
"I just feel pretty comfortable out on the golf course. I've been around it so many times now, so (it) kind of almost has that home course feel and you just feel like you know it so well."
A highlight of the opening round was Hatton holing an impressive chip-shot on the par-five fourth.
The tournament is a Rolex Series events and has a prize pool of $7,000,000 USD in addition to 7000 R2D points.
