Travel and gathering restrictions forced organisers to cancel the October event that attracts pilgrims from all over Australia.
"The society has been waiting for as long as possible to decide whether the 2020 Christus Rex pilgrimage would be able to be conducted in October as a public procession from Ballarat to Bendigo," the organisation wrote on its website.

"Unfortunately, it is now clear that the restrictions on travel and gatherings in Victoria mean that it will be practically impossible for the Christus Rex Society to provide any material support to any pilgrims."
Organisers will now focus on encouraging pilgrims uniting online for prayer.
The first pilgrimage was held in 1991 to unite people in prayer, penance, reflection and celebration of the feast of Christ the King.
