Robert Norman Debono, 45, appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Wednesday when he pleaded guilty to 11 charges, including burglary, theft, and obtaining property by deception.

The court heard on June 29 this year, Debono went to a Kyabram property where a Jeep Cherokee was parked in the driveway.

Debono entered the unlocked car and searched through a bag that was left inside. He stole a debit card and then left the bag on the ground behind the car, before leaving the area.

The court heard Debono made three unauthorised transactions using that card.

Then about 7.03pm that day, Debono was captured on CCTV footage using the stolen card at a Kyabram service station. He purchased cigarettes, a lighter, and an iced coffee for $44.75.

About 7.46am the next day, Debono used the same card to purchase more cigarettes, iced coffee, and a reusable shopping bag worth $49.84 from a Kyabram supermarket.

Later that day, Debono also purchased a magazine, worth $17.70, from another store using the same stolen bank card.

The court then heard between July 20 and July 21 this year, Debono went to a West Bendigo address where a Holden Commodore was parked in the driveway.

Debono entered the unlocked car and stole a wallet containing a bank card. He also stole a shopping bag containing Nike runners and Everlast shorts. The items were valued at $165.

The court heard Debono used the bank card to purchase food and cigarettes from a Bendigo service station on July 21. The total value of the purchase was $61.10.

Then about 6.03am on August 4 this year, Debono went to a Golden Square address where a white Mitsubishi Triton ute was parked in the driveway.

Debono entered the unlocked car and stole items including cigarettes, a speaker, and a battery pack. The items, which have not been recovered, were worth $500.

The court heard then about 2.17pm on August 7 this year, Debono drove to an East Bendigo address in a red Mitsubishi Magna. He was unlicensed at the time.

He was captured on CCTV footage looking through the window of the property before returning to his car and driving to a second entrance.

Debono attempted to remove an electronic keypad so he could enter the premises. He was unable to remove the lock but went inside though a rear door.

The court heard Debono searched through the home and stole a number of items including a Smart TV, an Apple computer and iPad, an Amazon speaker, and a safe containing passports.

The stolen items were worth about $6500.

The court heard Debono stayed in his car in the driveway for some time. A witness approached the car and saw Debono with his pants pulled down and masturbating.

The witness returned to her home and Debono left a note on her front door, asking to take her out. Debono left the address about 7.30pm that day.

The court heard then some time between 9pm on August 7 and 2.30am on August 8, Debono went to a property in Golden Square where a red Toyota Camry was parked in the driveway.

Debono entered the unlocked car and stole a handbag, which contained a drivers licence, a credit card, and a debit card.

The court heard Debono used the stolen debit card for two transactions.

Then about 2.32am on August 8, Debono was captured on CCTV footage driving the Mitsubishi Magna to a Strathdale service station.

He used the stolen credit card to purchase fuel, iced coffee, and cigarettes for $58.35.

Then about 8.38am that day, Debono drove the car to a McDonalds store in California Gully where he used the stolen debit card to purchase food worth $17.

Debono was still unlicensed at the time of the offending.

The court heard about 9.30am on August 11 police went to a Long Gully address to arrest Debono.

He refused to answer the door and then refused to comply with verbal instructions when police forced their way inside.

Debono was eventually restrained and arrested. Police found one of the stolen bank cards in Debono's possession.

Defence counsel Deniz Yildirim told the court at the time of the offending, Debono was homeless and not medicated for paranoid schizophrenia, ADHD, anxiety, and depression.

Mr Yildirim said Debono had also been using drugs as a way to self-medicate after the deaths of his fiancee and mother.

The defence counsel said Debono had made admissions to police and entered a guilty plea at an early stage.

Mr Yildirim said a short jail term would be an appropriate sentence given Debono had already been in custody for 45 days, including 28 of those days in COVID-19 lockdown.

Magistrate Rodney Higgins convicted and sentenced Debono to a six-month jail term. His pre-sentence detention was reckoned as already served.
