Herbert wrapped up the final round at 12-over after rounds of 72, 74, 74 and 72 to finish T31 and also as the leading Australian player.

"It's a step forward for sure," Herbert said after the round.

"It's more learning playing major championships - both how to manage my own preparations and game as well as how to navigate tough, penalising golf courses."

American Bryson DeChambeau was 2020 US Open winner finishing as the only player in the field under par (-6), also securing his first major tournament.

Herbert's final round score card included six pars, two birdies and one bogey on the front-nine to be one-under.

On the back-nine he put six pars and three bogeys down to finish the back at three-over, a total of two-over for the round.

Highlights from Herbert's final round at the notoriously difficult Winged Foot Golf Club included a stunning birdie on the par-three third hole which was set up with a magnificent iron shot to within four feet of the pin.

His second birdie of the round was on the par-five ninth where he sent his 330m tee shot straight down to the middle which he followed up with an accurate approach shot to the left of the green.

He put his putting skills to work with two clean putts to finish the hole with a birdie.

Throughout the tournament Herbert was 14^th in total average driving distance and T3 in putting.

Fellow Australians who made the cut Adam Scott, Jason Day and Cameron Smith all finished T38, two shots behind Herbert at 14-over.

Herbert will now head over the Atlantic ocean to head back to the European Tour where he is entered to compete in this week's Irish Open at Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
