After starting the day in a tie for 49th, Herbert shot a second-straight four-over par 74 to be 10-over par the tournament in a tie for 40th place.
Herbert's best finish in the handful of majors he's played in his short career is tied for 51st at The Open Championship in 2018.
American Matthew Wolff leads the tournament at five-under par after he fired a superb 65 on day three.
Only three players in the field are under-par with one round remaining - Wolff (-5), Bryson DeChambeau (-3) and Louis Oosthuizen (-1).
Herbert started his third round in fine fashion by chipping in for birdie from thick rough on the par-four first.
However, wayward tee shots on the second, third and fifth holes were the catalyst for three bogeys.
Herbert made a five metre birdie putt on the par-three seventh, but he gave that shot back by bogeying the par-four eighth.
Herbert scrambled well to make pars on the ninth, 10th and 11th holes, before a brilliant wedge from 120m out on the 12th hole gave him a tap-in birdie.
Wayward tee shots on the 13th and 14th led to bogeys.
Herbert played solidly to make pars on the difficult 15th, 16th and 17th holes.
His tee shot on the 18th missed the fairway left and from the thick rough he could only advance the ball 120m up the fairway.
His pitch from 50m short of the green finished above the hole and Herbert was left with a treacherous 10m putt down the slope for par.
The par putt slid two-and-a-half metres past the hole and Herbert did well to make the bogey putt back up the hill.
Herbert remains in the top five in the field for putting after three rounds.
In terms of the leading Australian at the tournament, the 24-year-old is one shot behind Adam Scott going into the final round.
Scott (+9) shot a 74 on day three, while Jason Day (+12) fired a 76 and Cameron Smith (+12) had a 78.
Herbert will play alongside Frenchman Romain Langasque in the final round.
