He carded a one-over par front-nine before coming back into the clubhouse with another one-over on the back to finish the opening round at Winged Foot Golf Club at two-over.
Herbert started his US Open campaign on the right foot with a 280m drive off the par-four first, followed by an accurate iron shot to the green which he was then able to sink for birdie.
He made par on the second, bogey on the third and par on the fourth before knocking in his second birdie on the par-four fifth.
He then saw the front-nine out with pars on the sixth and seventh, before back-to-back bogeys on the eighth and ninth.
Off the tee on the par-three tenth he found one of the bunkers and started the back with a bogey, he made par on the 11th before getting himself back to an even scorecard with consecutive birdies on the 12th and 13th.
It wasn't long before he went back above par with a bogey on the par-four 14th which he then followed it up with a trifecta of pars on 15, 16 and 17.
An errant tee shot on the par-four 18th put him in trouble and then left lea his approach shot just short of the green ending with a bogey to finish at two-over for the day.
Herbert hit four out of 14 fairways fairways (T109th), eight out of 18 greens (117th) and is ranked 10th in the field for putting.
Justin Thomas was the best of the day finishing with a below-par round of five-under with Patrick Reed, Thomas Pieters and Matthew Wolff close behind at four-under.
"We had soft conditions this morning, a little overcast. Wind wasn't really blowing very much. So it was good scoring conditions. In the morning, it's usually softer anyway," Thomas said after the round.
